Carer of a husband with Parkinson’s disease Parkinson’s Voices Advocate

Veronica met her husband Jose Maria at the tender age of 16; from their first meeting the pair knew they were perfect for one another. After Veronica completed her education, the two started to build a successful life together. However, things began to change in 2003 when Veronica noticed her once lively and happy husband had become expressionless. Her concerns grew as Jose Maria lost large amounts of weight and began to exhibit mood swings. In 2004, the couple decided to visit their family doctor to discuss Jose Maria’s symptoms. After being referred to a neurologist, Veronica accompanied her husband to the appointment. Both were shocked when Jose Maria was given a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.  Her reaction of despair turned to optimism when her husband told her, “Vero, don’t turn this into a tragedy.”

With support from his family, Jose Maria began working with his neurologist to find a suitable medication to manage his symptoms. After finding the best treatment option, Jose Maria continues to work with his neurologist to make adjustments when necessary and has shown improvement much to Veronica’s delight.
Veronica continues to support her husband in all his endeavors including his engagement in swimming and walking. Today, Veronica enjoys spending every weekend in the countryside with her family. She’s proud that her family has come together in the face of adversity and admires her husband’s thirst for survival in the face of Parkinson’s.
